Card of the Day - Wednesday, March 31, 2010

The Cheese Stands Alone Unglued rare. Eighth Edition contained a never-before-reprinted card from every set in Magic. The plan at one point was to bring The Cheese Stands Alone into "real" Magic, but the rules regarding silver-bordered cards made it impractical. The mechanic finally made it into Future Sight, though, in the form of Barren Glory.

Card of the Day - Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Offering to Asha Alara Reborn common. Offering to Asha is an exceedingly balanced card. The converted mana cost is four, the mana mentioned in the rules text is 4 Mana, the spell gains the controller 4 life, and the flavor text is four lines.

Card of the Day - Monday, March 29, 2010

Rise // Fall Dissension uncommon. If you look carefully at the left side of the art for the "Fall" side of Rise // Fall, you can see the Rakdos symbol carved into the wall of the pit!

Card of the Day - Friday, March 26, 2010

Tarpan Ice Age common. A tarpan is a kind of wild horse, which has been extinct since the last one died in captivity in 1909 in Russia. So if you've been trying to summon one and have been having trouble for the last hundred years, that's why.

Card of the Day - Thursday, March 25, 2010

Scryb Sprites Limited Edition Alpha common. For something clearly out of the color pie (a common flier for green? For one mana?), Scryb Sprites stuck around for a surprisingly long time, appearing in every core set through Fifth Edition.

Card of the Day - Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Cheatyface Unhinged uncommon. Cheatyface essentially introduced a new minigame into silver-bordered Magic, in which players of a certain mindset strove to come up with new and more devious ways of getting it into play. Randy Buehler, for example, once used his baby as a shield while getting it into play. That's a lot of work for a 2/2 flier!

Card of the Day - Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Tahngarth, Talruum Hero Planeshift alternate-art rare. Planeshift had secret alternate-art foil versions for three of its legends. They were Tahngarth, Talruum Hero, Skyship Weatherlight, and Ertai, the Corrupted. The fourth legend in the set was Nemata, Grove Guardian, which did not receive the alternate-art treatment.

Card of the Day - Monday, March 22, 2010

Soraya the Falconer Homelands rare. Soraya the Falconer got better with the Grand Creature Type Update; now, even owls, albatrosses, and rukhs can get benefit from Soraya. This suggests that Soraya is an excellent falconer, as opposed to that other falconer, who doesn't actually interact with the beasts of the air at all.

Card of the Day - Friday, March 19, 2010

Belfry Spirit Guildpact uncommon. Belfry Spirit implies one of two things. Either bats naturally hang out with ghosts (which sounds logical) or there are, in fact, bats in almost every belfry.

Card of the Day - Thursday, March 18, 2010

Chicken Egg Unglued uncommon. Chicken Egg is, of course, a reference to the classic Rukh Egg from Arabian Nights. Sure, it's randomly instigated instead of happening when the egg goes to the graveyard and a Chicken instead of a Rukh, but Christopher Rush's egg is clearly the same one he drew the first time.

Card of the Day - Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Root-Kin Ally Ravnica: City of Guilds uncommon. In Ravnica block, the suffix "-kin" indicates an elemental, as seen in the Root-Kin, Wood-Kin, and Flame-Kin (no relation to the Flamekin of Lorwyn).

Card of the Day - Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Rogue Elephant Weatherlight common. Rogue Elephant comes with a pretty harsh drawback for a one-mana 3/3. But it was printed in the same set as Harvest Wurm, which could help counteract that drawback at two mana. Add in Fallow Wurm, and you can see how lands were going in and out of the graveyard a lot during Weatherlight.

Card of the Day - Monday, March 15, 2010

Giant Octopus Ninth Edition common. Thanks to the printing of Lorthos the Tidemaker, Giant Octopus is actually the smallest octopus available for summoning (non-Changeling division).

Card of the Day - Friday, March 12, 2010

Form of the Dragon From the Vault: Dragons rare. On the From the Vault: Dragons printing of Form of the Dragon, Sarkhan Vol can be seen turning into a dragon. If you want to see this presented as a piece of sequential art, stay tuned for part two of Awakenings, which will arrive on Thursday.

Card of the Day - Thursday, March 11, 2010

Brilliant Ultimatum Shards of Alara rare. Brilliant Ultimatum depicts Tezzeret the Seeker discovering the truth about Esper. The scene is depicted in more detail in part two of The Seeker's Fall.

Card of the Day - Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Selective Memory Worldwake rare. Jace is a master of affecting other people's minds and memories (you might even call him a Mind Sculptor). He can be seen doing just that to Chandra in Fuel for the Fire, Part III.

Card of the Day - Tuesday, March 09, 2010

Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund Alara Reborn mythic rare. Who could command the great and powerful Karrthus? According to Part 3 of Flight of the White Cat, the answer is Sarkhan Vol, who prevents Karrthus from eating Ajani.

Card of the Day - Monday, March 08, 2010

Anowon, the Ruin Sage Worldwake rare. The flavor text for Anowon, the Ruin Sage refers to a map in the hands of "the arrogant child Chandra Nalaar". Their confrontation appears in Part 3 of Journey to the Eye, a Planeswalker webcomic.

Card of the Day - Friday, March 05, 2010

Mercadian Atlas Mercadian Masques rare. Mercadian Atlas doesn't want you to play a land. But if you also had Walking Atlas, you could get around that by putting the land directly onto the battlefield. Atlases have synergy!

Card of the Day - Thursday, March 04, 2010

Ranger of Eos Shards of Alara rare. Ranger of Eos was created as part of the prize for Hall of Famer Antoine Ruel winning the 2006 Magic Invitational. He's also in the art (hint: not the bird or the dog).

Card of the Day - Wednesday, March 03, 2010

Chronozoa Planar Chaos rare. Does it seem strange that Chronozoa has Vanishing? After all, its ability ensures that when it runs out of counters, it doesn't really "vanish" so much as "double itself."

Card of the Day - Tuesday, March 02, 2010

Chisei, Heart of Oceans Betrayers of Kamigawa rare. Chisei represents the essence of intelligence, and its very presence heightens the intellect of other beings. That was pretty much all the direction artist Matt Cavotta was given, since the spirits of Kamigawa were notoriously strange and abstract.

Card of the Day - Monday, March 01, 2010

Hyperion Blacksmith Legends uncommon. Although we now call Hyperion Blacksmith an uncommon, it was officially a "U1", meaning that it appeared once on the uncommon sheet. The five Legends rarities were C1, C2, U1, U2, and R1.
