At Grand Prix Yokohama last weekend, more than 1,500 players came out to battle in Modern for the Grand Prix title. On Friday, players swarmed the site in search of claiming some last-minute byes in the last-chance qualifier tournaments. One player to do so? Victor Mayor Redondo! His unique reanimator deck took down the qualifier, showing off yet another new and exciting archetype for the Modern format.
This deck aims to reanimate a legendary creature as quickly as possible. Goryo's Vengeance allows you to reanimate any for only two mana. Although the creature is exiled at the end of the turn, that's not quite as relevant when your reanimation targets are Griselbrand and Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur! Those targets let you draw more cards, very likely handing you another reanimation spell—perhaps even an Unburial Rites to keep your creature around permanently!
The engine of this deck is where it gets really interesting. Everyone's favorite unkillable goblin, Squee, Goblin Nabob serves as a huge component of this deck. Discarding Squee to Faithless Looting is painless, allowing you to retain extra cards to discard. The deck is also packed full of discard spells like Inquisition of Kozilek and Thoughtseize, and so on a stalled board a pair of Squees plus Zombie Infestation creates an extra zombie each turn.
