Token Artist

Last week, we took the time to look at a white-black tokens list that was a little different than the norm. That list happened to be a hundred cards and not share the same one twice, as it was Commander, but today we get to look at a white-black tokens list that is different for an entirely different reason. When Sorin, Lord of Innistrad first came out, most people were excited by the prospect of having a new Elspeth, Knight-Errant to fuel a tokens list. But Eidriam decided even the Lord of Innistrad himself was not good enough for the list.

Instead of relying on the recurring token production of Sorin, Eldriam has turned to all of the traditional one-shot token producers and maxed out on them. Gather the Townsfolk; Midnight Haunting; and, of course, Lingering Souls really provide the background for what this deck is trying to accomplish. Of course, we need a way to improve the quality of our tokens, so seven anthem effects in Honor of the Pure and Intangible Virtue help to get that job done. Similarly, Hero of Bladehold has never been shy around a mass of tokens.

Blood Artist is really where this list shines compared to others, though. Token decks are known for being a sort of all-in strategy that, at its core, revolves around creatures. As a result, these decks tend to be weak to mass removal. Blood Artist threatens revenge on these sweepers, though, as he punishes the opponent for each "creature" that he or she manages to deal with. That life loss adds up quickly, especially on top of the normal combat damage you have already dealt! Vampires and Humans working together... who knew?
