egacy is a pretty wide-open format, but you do tend to see the same cards show up again and again because they are just that good. Brainstorm is a great example of this. Despite the fact that decks featuring the card can be just about anything, from combo to control, the card remains a central link between them. New combinations of cards pop up all of the time, but for a new card to breakinto the format, a lot has to go right. Caleb Durward is known for trying to get just that to happen in Legacy, and I think his latest brew catches even the most dedicated Legacy connoisseur off guard.
Not only did Caleb win the recent StarCityGames Open in Cincinnati with a blue deck that did not contain Brainstorm, but he did so with a deck that features Karn Liberated! Despite the card being criticized for being too slow in formats like Standard, Caleb figured he would give it a go in Legacy, a much faster and less forgiving format for the seven-mana Planeswalker. Caleb didn't stop there, though, as there are seven more Planeswalkers in his deck, all costing four mana!
Caleb actually managed to play multiple cards that I have never seen grace a Legacy list before (although they very well might have). Solemn Simulacrum, Dimir Signet, and Talisman of Dominance are all pretty novel, which is an exciting thing to say for the Legacy community. Caleb can just treat his deck like a ramp deck, similar to Urzatron strategies, but Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas also gives him an explosive clock when need be. This is a refreshing take on Legacy and I would expect a lot of similar strategies to be tried over the next few weeks.
