The letter I! mentioned yesterday that Jeff Hoogland had an exceptional weekend in Milwaukee, and today I'm going to discuss the deck that brought him to the Top 4 of the Standard Open tournament the day before his Legacy finish.

Jeff played a blue, red, and green deck designed to push Huntmaster of the Fells as much as possible. Every card in Jeff's deck except Mizzium Mortars and Huntmaster of the Fells can be played at instant speed, and, thanks to Yeva, Nature's Herald, even Huntmaster of the Fells can be played at instant speed some of the time.

This means that Jeff Hoogland never needs to play spells on his turn, which means he's always threatening to flip his Werewolves if his opponent can't play an instant. After they flip, cards like Snapcaster Mage and Think Twice make it easy for Jeff to flip them back on his opponent's turn, potentially allowing Huntmaster of the Fells to flip back and forth every single turn.

Jeff won't always have a Huntmaster of the Fells in play, and when he doesn't, he still has a solid game plan. Jeff has six counterspells, so he can always pass the turn ready to counter whatever his opponent does, and if the opponent tries to play around a counterspell by skipping his or her turn or playing a weak threat, Jeff can seize the opportunity at the end of the turn to cast a threat. From there, he can often sit back and protect that threat, riding it to victory.
