A Different Reanimator

The letter J!unk Reanimator has become the dominant deck in Standard, and it's well known enough that I wouldn't write about it, so I've become used to seeing Unburial Rites and skimming past to the next deck. Matsumoto Yuuki has taken his deck in a different direction, though.

His use of a red splash for Faithless Looting and Huntmaster of the Fells, which he can return with Angel of Glory's Rise, may look like a throwback to the old Human Reanimator decks like the deck we saw Tzu-Ching Kuo take to the finals of Grand Prix Quebec City earlier this year. However, unlike previous Angel of Glory's Rise decks, Matsumoto has no infinite combo; he's just putting more creatures into play and passing the turn.

Why would he do that? Well, he doesn't have to play any weaker support cards that just enable the combo (I'm not going to sit here and tell you that Cathedral Sanctifier isn't a weak support card, but it still doesn't take the full dedication the combo does, and if the benchmark is Centaur Healer, this really isn't much worse).

Matsumoto's deck essentially looks like the deck that Human Reanimator sides into, bringing Thragtusk, Restoration Angel, and Angel of Serenity to play a fair game.

This leaves Matsumoto with space to actually have a sideboard with removal, even more diverse threats, and Slaughter Games (to accompany Acidic Slime) to beat other Unburial Rites or control players.
