My First Dragon's Maze Standard Deck

The letter A!s we prepare for Dragon's Maze release today, it's time for me to share a Standard deck for the new format. There's one card in Dragon's Maze I absolutely had to build a deck with: Varolz, the Scar-Striped. Varolz is kind of like a bigger Cartel Aristocrat, and Dragon's Maze brings along a much bigger Doomed Traveler to go with it in the form of Voice of Resurgence.

This deck will be something like a take on The Aristocrats with green instead of red.

My favorite play in Standard is Doomed Traveler into Skirsdag High Priest into Cartel Aristocrat, making a Demon. Adding green lets me make the same play with Young Wolf, and adding Varolz, the Scar-Striped lets me make the same play with him instead of Cartel Aristocrat. End result: more turn-three Demons.

All these creatures that stick around mean that the token created by Voice of Resurgence is going to be huge, which is particularly good news for me, since I'll be able to sacrifice it to create that token whenever I want.

Cartel Aristocrat also has a great interaction with Varolz, in that I can use his third ability (in order of importance, not order printed on the card—first is "sacrifice a creature," second is "regenerate," and the third is that all your creatures have scavenge) to make Cartel Aristocrat big, and then sacrifice some random guys to make it unblockable. This is a common play to attack for 2 in other decks with Cartel Aristocrat, but can easily be much bigger here.

Speaking of big, protected Cartel Aristocrats, this deck is an excellent home for the new Armadillo Cloak, Unflinching Courage. I only really want it against people I need to race, but how does an aggro deck beat turn-one Young Wolf/Doomed Traveler, turn two Cartel Aristocrat, turn three Unflinching Courage?

I've said on twitter that Maw of the Obzedat is too expensive for me, but when I build the perfect home for it, I have to give it a chance. Demonlord of Ashmouth is a bit of a stretch, but I like having another sac outlet and I thought it might be powerful.
