You might have seen plenty of Primeval Titan-based ramp decks before, but never like this! R&D member Steve Warner loves playing with wacky cards, and one of the craziest cards in all of Avacyn Restored is Primal Surge. Steve brought this deck to Seattle-area Magic store Game On! for spellslinging at last weekend's Prerelease. Several opponents found themselves in a rough place as Primal Surge threatened to flip half—or more—of his deck onto the table.
The tricky part of Primal Surge is that you don't really want any other non-permanents in your deck, pushing normal ramp options like Rampant Growth right out. Primeval Titan is still there, but what else can you use?
Turns out, there's quite a bit available in Standard! The trifecta of Birds of Paradise, Avacyn's Pilgrim, and Llanowar Elves all made the cut, and Elvish Archdruid just added to the punch. Steve dug a little deeper and came up with two fairly underused cards: Rites of Flourishing and Shrine of Boundless Growth. These can quickly help push you into Primal Surge range.
Primal Surging into Craterhoof Behemoths should usually be more than enough defeat your opponent, but you can also just cast your creatures in this deck! Craterhoof Behemoth; Primeval Titan; Soul of the Harvest; and Sigarda, Host of Herons all pose gigantic threats to your opponent's life total.
Check out Steve's decklist below. If you've been looking to tweak your ramp decks to make use of this new ten-mana sorcery, Steve's deck is right up your alley!
