Richards is a former Latin American Champion, but also resides in New Zealand, which makes him as close to a hometown favorite as you can get without being Australian. Today he is playing a very aggressive green/red/white deck that utilizes Living Wish
. Mowshowitz, the mad scientist of Magic, is running a three-color Psychatog
deck that splashes red for Flametongue Kavu
and Burning Wish
. Needless to say, the Wish mechanic is something that many players are looking to abuse this weekend. The ability to go get the right card at any moment is far too good to ignore.
Richards opened up strong with a first turn Sylvan Safekeeper, followed by Yavimaya Barbarian. The third turn would have brought Elephant Guide, but Mowshowitz had Memory Lapse. A second Lapse countered it on the following turn, and Richards was stuck at three land. Mowshowitz brought out Flametongue Kavu, and Richards was not too eager to go down to two lands to save it. Elephant Guide enchanted the Safekeeper and traded with the Flametongue, leaving only an elephant token on the battlefield. Mowshowitz answered back strong with Merfolk Looter and Burning Wish for Chainer's Edict. Richards then attacked for three and cast Living Wish to get Battlefield Forge, and used Fire to take out the Looter.
Mowshowitz cast Fact or Fiction soon after and the piles were Nightscape Familiar with two lands, and Memory Lapse with one land. Mowshowitz took the three card pile, and cast the Edict to kill off the elephant. With Mowshowitz tapped out, Richards cast Living Wish to get Genesis. Nightscape Familiar showed up on the following turn, and Ice tapped down Richards' City of Brass on upkeep. Another Fact or Fiction was played, and the piles were Nightscape Familiar, Burning Wish, Flametongue Kavu and Psychatog, Urborg Volcano. Mowshowitz took the three-card pile.
Mowshowitz summoned a second Nightscape Familiar
, and Burning Wish
followed, fetching Upheaval
. Richards summoned Yavimaya Barbarian
, but it fell to Flametongue Kavu
. Even though Mowshowitz had Upheaval
and plenty of mana in play, he seemed content to sit on his superior board position until Richards gave him a reason to use the reset button. Richards played Genesis
to slow things down a bit, but Mowshowitz simply flashed back the Edict and attacked for six. Fire
targeted the Familiars but was countered with Circular Logic
, and the next attack finished it up.
Richards- 0 Mowshowitz- 1
Richards had another great start, with Wild Mongrel, Grim Lavamancer and Yavimaya Barbarian all out by turn three. Fire took down the Barbarian, and Mowshowitz summoned Nightscape Familiar. Mongrel became 3/3 so that Grim Lavamancer could take out the Familiar while Mowshowitz was tapped out. Regardless, Mowshowitz began gaining back card advantage as Flametongue Kavu killed the Lavamancer. The next turn was even worse for Richards, as Chainer's Edict killed the Mongrel, and Psychatog joined the team. Fact or Fiction gave Mowshowitz Circular Logic for safety, and Firebolt helped him squeeze through the final points of damage.
Final Result: Richards- 0 Mowshowitz- 2
