Fear Aura (Su): Any creature of less than 5 HD within a 60-foot radius that looks at Nijel must succeed at a Will save (DC 20) or be affected as though by fear (caster level 18th).

Paralyzing Touch (Su): Any living creature Nijel touches must succeed at a Fortitude save (DC 20) or be permanently paralyzed. Remove paralysis or any spell that can remove a curse can free the victim (see the bestow curse spell). The effect cannot be dispelled. Anyone paralyzed by Nijel seems dead, though a successful Spot check (DC 20) or Heal check (DC 15) reveals that the victim is still alive.

Counterspell (Ex): As a result of becoming a neutral lich, Nijel has acquired a unique counterspell ability. Any harmful magical effect directed at him fails, usually in the most spectacular and embarrassing way possible.

Empathic Link (Su): Nijel can communicate telepathically with Dave at a distance of up to one mile. He has the same connection to an item or a place that Dave does.

Immunities: Nijel is immune to cold, electricity, polymorph, and mind-affecting attacks.

Imp Familiar: Nijel has an imp familiar named Dave. He is constantly in the form of an immense canary, and he tells Nijel that he is a dire canary.

Scry on Familiar (Sp): Nijel may scry on Dave as if casting the spell scrying once per day.

Share Spells: Nijel may have any spell he casts on himself also affect Dave if the latter is within 5 ft. at the time. Nijel may also cast a spell with a target of "You" on Dave.

Touch: Dave can deliver touch spells for Nijel.

Turn Resistance (Ex): Nijel is less easily affected by clerics or paladins. When resolving a turn, rebuke, command, or bolster attempt, he is treated as a 22-HD undead.

Undead Traits: Nijel is immune to poison, sleep, paralysis, stunning, disease, death, effects, necromantic effects, mind-influencing effects, and any effect requiring a Fortitude save unless it also works on objects. He is not subject to critical hits, subdual damage, ability damage, ability drain, or energy drain. Negative energy heals him, and he is not at risk of death from massive damage but is destroyed at 0 hit points or less. Nijel has darkvision 60 feet. He cannot be raised, and resurrection works only if he is willing. Unless his phylactery is destroyed, he reappears 1d10 days after his apparent death.

Dave (Dire Canary Form): Male imp; CR -- ; Medium-size outsider (evil, lawful); HD 3d8 (effective 18 HD); hp 58; Init +2; Spd 20 ft., fly 50 ft. (perfect); AC 24, touch 12, flat-footed 22; Atk +13 melee (1d6+6, bite); SA Poison, spell-like abilities; SQ Alternate form, coal fume vulnerability, DR 5/silver, empathic link with Nijel, fire resistance 20, immunities, improved evasion, outsider traits, regeneration 2, see in darkness, speak with Nijel, SR 23, touch; AL LE; SV Fort +8, Ref +8, Will +12; Str 18, Dex 14, Con 15, Int 15, Wis 12, Cha 10.

Skills and Feats: Hide +6, Listen +5, Move Silently +8, Search +8, Spellcraft +8, Spot +5; Dodge, Weapon Finesse (sting).

Poison (Ex): Dave delivers his poison (Fortitude save DC 15, including a +2 racial bonus) via a successful sting attack when in his normal form. The initial damage is 1d4 points of Dexterity damage; the secondary damage is 2d4 points of Dexterity damage.

Spell-like Abilities: At will -- detect magic, detect good, invisibility (self only); 1/day -- suggestion. Caster level 6th; save DC 10 + spell level.

Alternate Form (Su): Dave can assume other forms at will as a standard action. This ability functions exactly like a polymorph self spell (caster level 12th), except that Dave can assume only the form of a large canary.

Coal Fume Vulnerability (Ex): Dave immediately begins to take asphyxiation damage (see drowning rules in the Dungeon Master's Guide) if exposed to noxious coal fumes, with no saving throw. Dave avoids coal like the plague and much prefers magical heating, clean-burning natural gas, or solar power.

Empathic Link (Su): Dave has an empathic link with Nijel out to a distance of up to one mile. Nijel cannot see through Dave's eyes, but the two of them can communicate telepathically.

Immunities: Dave is immune to poison.

Improved Evasion (Ex): If Dave is subject to an attack that normally allows a Reflex saving throw for half damage, he takes no damage on a successful save or half damage on a failed save.

Outsider Traits: Dave had darkvision 60 ft. He cannot be raised or resurrected (though a wish or miracle spell can restore life).

Regeneration (Ex): Damage dealt to Dave is treated as subdual damage, which automatically heals at a rate of 2 hit points per round. Acid attacks and holy or blessed weapons (if silver or enchanted) deal normal damage to him, which doesn't go away. Attack forms that don't deal hit point damage ignore regeneration, and it does not restore hit points lost from starvation, thirst, or suffocation. Dave can regrow lost parts of his body and can reattach severed limbs and body parts. Severed parts that are not reattached wither and die normally.

See in Darkness (Su): Dave can see perfectly in darkness of any kind, even that created by a deeper darkness spell.

Speak with Master: Dave and Nijel can communicate verbally as if they were using a common language, regardless of Dave's form. Other creatures do not understand the communication without magical help.

Touch: Dave can deliver touch spells for Nijel.
