Thayan Knight
Recurring Villainy

Exciting and dangerous recurring villains are a hallmark of quality roleplaying-game campaigns, and few fantasy images are more compelling than the knight, so this installment of Recurring Villainy focuses on an evil knight. For those who play or DM in the Forgotten Realms setting, the central figure of this column is likely familiar to you, at least by name: the Thayan Knight from the Dragoneye set. In the FR campaign, these evil warriors act as agents and bodyguards of the wicked Red Wizards of Thay. The Thayan Knight is usable in a non-FR game as well -- it's formidable skills make it a dangerous adversary anywhere.

Presented here are 20 encounters ranging from EL 4 to 10. Each involves the knight and/or its minions. Feel free to substitute other figures of the same ELs if you want more variety among the Thayan's lackeys or to surprise players.

As with any recurring villain, it's important that the dastard survive long enough for the players to develop a good, strong hatred for him or her before the final confrontation. Hairs-breadth escapes, healing magic, and magical transportation are all good ways to keep the villain out of the PCs' hands until just the right moment.
